Albionites have lacked an officially-sanctioned natural swimming hole in which to cool off during the hot summer months. The youth of our community have either had to pay money to use a chlorinated pool, or swim clandestinely by the Victory Park waterfall as has often been the case, or find transportation to Swain’s Lake.
As the boating season is in full force at area lakes, we are reminded that Albion once had boats manufactured right here in town. It was in 1910 that local sportsman Frank H. Darrow (1869-1945) built a steel flat bottom boat for himself in his barn at 612 E. Erie St. The Darrow Boat Company was incorporated in 1912.
The June 25 dedication of T-Ball Park at 510 S. Superior St. in honor of the late Coach Jerry Sacharski (1916-2009) and Pee Wee Baseball (which nationally became known as T-Ball) is a fitting memorial to this sport and its originator.
We continue with our theme of “Albion, 100 Years Ago.” July 1, 1922. “Quantities of Booze Seized in Big Raid. At 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon, officers of the City of Albion, swooped down on the homes of five in the foreign settlement, and seized quantities of liquor and paraphernalia.
I’ve recently discovered a voice recording of Albion’s famous writer/photographer/journalist Gwen Dew (1903-1993) on the internet. I’ve previously written about Gwen numerous times in this column.
As you drive along E. Michigan Avenue in Albion and see the replacement “Old Rugged Cross” State of Michigan historical marker that has been erected near the curb, you might be wondering what used to be in that now-vacant block between the circular College Court.
We continue with our theme of "Albion 100 Years Ago." June 5, 1922. "A business change of considerable importance was announced today, whereby Floyd Parks takes possession of the Kinmont retail drug business at the northwest corner of Superior and W. Erie Streets."
Each year at this time we feature the Albion High School class from 100 years ago. The Class of 1922 consisted of 56 persons. The class valedictorian was Pauline Torrey, while the salutatorian was Frank Sanders.
At this time of year, we feature one of Albion’s Civil War soldiers. Major Harrison Soule (1832-1922) was born in Murray, Orleans County, N.Y. on August 4, 1832.
At this time of year, we look back to the Civil War, that portion of our history which subsequently resulted in the holiday we know today as Memorial Day. On the southwest corner of W. Erie and S. Eaton Streets in Albion is the Peabody Place housing development.
Coming up on June 7 is the 100th anniversary of the tragic death of a little 4-year-old boy, Donald Richardson Dungey (1917-1922). Donald was the son of Emery/Emory (it’s spelled both ways in various records) & Marguerite (Richardson) Dungey who lived at 114 N. Eaton St. near the Kalamazoo River.
Another 100th anniversary in town is coming up next month. It’s the 100th anniversary of the building of the Albion High School “west wing” addition to the Central School on E. Michigan Avenue.
